Main Function

When movement is needed, the nervous system is involved - it is mission control.  It carries information to the brain, the seat of intellect, reasoning and spiritual responses, where it is stored and interpreted sending commands to muscles and organs.  It also sends nerve impulses to areas of the body for involuntary actions.  Its three areas are the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system including cranial nerves and the autonomic nervous system including the rest/digest and fight/flight responses.

How It Works

The thoughts we have and decisions we make result from electrical and chemical signals to and from nerve cells.  Organs, physiology, psychological reactions and the endocrine system are controlled by the nervous system.  Nerve cells, or neurons, carry electrical charges called impulses using potassium and sodium and other charged substances to respond to stimuli and transmit signals.  They need a constant supply of oxygen and glucose.

Cause of Weakness

The nervous system can be damaged by poor diet, lack of sleep, lack of exercise which reduces blood flow carrying oxygen and glucose, hypertension, stress, inflammation, infection, viruses, trauma and exposure to radiation.

Common Problems

Some issues are neuritis, muscle weakness or atrophy, hypersensitivity or loss of sensation, nerve pain, fibromyalgia, sciatica, shingles and carpal tunnel syndrome.
