Main Function
The endocrine system regulates countless body functions. Its main roles are to coordinate growth, maturation, reproduction and metabolism by the formation and release of hormones. The basic function of metabolism is to convert nutrients into energy and build materials to meet the body’s need.
How It Works
The hypothalamus gland regulates hunger, thirst, sleep/wake cycle and involuntary mechanisms like body temperature. The pituitary is the master gland controlling all other glands. The thyroid regulates energy and metabolism. The pancreas aids in digestion of protein, fats and carbohydrates while producing insulin controlling blood sugar levels. The thymus gland helps build resistance to disease. The ovaries influence how the blood circulates, determines mental vigor and sex drive. Adrenals secrete cortisone and adrenaline helping in emergencies and regulate the metabolic processes of the cells.
Cause of Weakness
Food choices, environment, lifestyle, stress and age greatly impact endocrine health. Disorders result when glands over-secrete or under-secrete their hormones.
Common Problems
Common issues of the endocrine system are adrenal fatigue, insomnia, weight gain/loss, blood sugar fluctuations, infertility, poor digestion, weak immune system, lymphatic congestion and nervous system irregularities.
