Areas Impacted by Digestive Health

Gut
Are you experiencing bloating, ulcers, gallstones, gas, irritable bowel, heartburn, food allergies, diarrhea, constipation or leaky gut?
The gut encompasses the stomach, colon as well as the small and large intestines. Digestion impacts overall gut health as undigested food, an imbalance of HCL in the stomach and bacteria in the microbiome can have a significant impact with a domino effect to the rest of the body. Digestion also involves the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. If these organs are not functioning well, they too can impact the digestive process leading to the above symptoms and more.

Endocrine
Do you feel tired, fatigued, weak, have trouble concentrating, brain fog, insomnia, blood sugar imbalance, thyroid disorders, irregular menstruation or low testosterone?
The endocrine system is intricately linked to digestive health. Proper balance of bacteria in the microbiome and consumption of fatty acids directly impact the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. They are involved in many metabolic processes including thyroid function, metabolism, energy production, fatigue, insomnia, blood sugar balance and irregular menstruation through the gut-brain axis.

Weight Management
Do you wrestle with weight loss or a larger belly?
Gut health is vital to maintaining a healthy weight. An unbalanced microbiome can impair digestion lead to health problems including weight gain. An unhealthy gut is a leading cause of intestinal and systemic inflammation, a disruptor of the metabolism impacting hormones that control regulation of appetite impacting weight. However, a healthy gut functions with proper digestion allowing for the absorption of nutrients for good metabolic function and regular elimination which can help keep a flatter mid-section.

Immune Health
Do your joints ache, do you have food sensitivity, skin rashes, chronic inflammatory bowel, attention deficit or other autoimmune concerns? Are you often catching the latest bug?
When the gut is impacted with poor digestion, processed or undigested food feeds an overgrowth of yeast and parasites can exists. This leads to intestinal inflammation, an erosion of the mucosal lining and a condition called leaky gut where the intestines become permeable. Food particles enter the bloodstream and the body reacts to these foreign invaders by ramping up the immune response systemically. On the other hand poor gut health can also weaken the immune system preventing it from protecting you from pathogens.

Emotional & Spiritual Health
Do you find yourself feeling moody, happy one minute and sad the next? Are you often anxious and do you wake up feeling unhappy?
The connection between gut health and the emotions is known as the "gut-brain axis," where the bacteria in your gut can directly influence your mood and mental state by signals to the brain through the nervous system. This means that a healthy gut microbiome is often associated with positive emotions while an imbalance in gut bacteria can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress by creating hormones such as serotonin and dopamine or triggering adrenals to make cortisol, the stress hormone. Essentially, your "gut feelings" can be a real physiological response to what's happening in your digestive system. In addition, quantum physics demonstrates we are spiritual or energetic in nature and emotions are often seen as a doorway to our authentic selves.

Nerve Health
Have you experienced numbness or tingling, especially in your extremities?
The gut and brain are connected by the vagus nerve which transmits bi-directional signals. Anxiety can cause tingling as it impacts blood flow to the body and nerve sensitivity. Magnesium, potassium, zinc and B vitamins help keep the nervous system functioning. If your stomach is inflamed, the enteric cells on it's lining won't be able to properly absorb B vitamins and poor gut health will impair mineral and vitamin absorption in the small intestine which the nervous system needs.
You are unique and so are your needs.

Cardiovascular Health
Have your lab results shown high cholesterol and blood pressure?
Diet plays a large role in your gut microbiome, so what you eat impacts your heart health. An unhealthy gut contributes to liver disease. The liver is heavily involved in cholesterol metabolism. It produces 80% of the cholesterol our bodies need, transports and removes cholesterol from the body. Different gut bacteria are associated with high blood pressure. Those with high blood pressure have lower levels of certain bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help regulate blood pressure.

Cognitive Health
Do you find it hard to concentrate, are you easily distracted, have you lost mental acuity or find that you are grasping for words that used to come quickly?
The gut and brain are connected through the gut-brain-axis, a network allowing communication from the GI tract and central nervous system. The gut produces hormones that impact brain function and the gut's bacteria produce chemicals that affect brain health. Studies show that a healthy gut microbiome can improve memeory, learning and attention. Proper diet and gut health can also reduce the risk of cognitive decline as we age.

Blog: Insomnia is Growing in America
Trouble sleeping? According to a 2020 National Health Interview Survey, close to 30% of Americans have trouble either falling asleep or staying asleep. Your circadian rhythm guides your sleep wake cycle and works with the natural rising and setting of the sun. Cortisol is your wake up hormone and levels rise around 3am reaching their peak about 8:30 am. Then throughout the day they decrease to begin again. Melatonin is your sleep hormone with levels beginning to rise around 9pm and decreasing around 3am. If your sleep-wake cycle is off and you have difficulty falling or staying asleep, there are a few things you can try.

Often calcium, magnesium, vitamins A, C, D, E and B6 are low for those who struggle with sleep as micronutrients assist with hormone production. Using a multi-strain probiotic can help you develop a healthy gut which is involved with production of balanced hormones and neurotransmitters. Be sure to get plenty of sunlight, not just during the middle of the day, but also first thing in the morning and in the evening as the sun sets. The sun helps regulate hormones. Take a small drink of unsweetened tart cherry juice when you come home from work and again before bed. It helps the body produce melatonin. Eat sufficient fiber and an anti-inflammatory diet throughout the day to maintain a healthy blood sugar balance, and consume iron containing foods such as dark leafy greens, legumes and nuts. Herbal supplements that help are valerian root, chamomile and limited amounts of melatonin for short periods of time.

Develop a sleep routine. Ditch the phone before bed, the blue light stimulates the adrenals to kick on. Pick up a book instead. Dim the lights a couple of hours prior to bedtime and make sure your bedroom is dark and cool. If you find your mind wanders, the homeopathic remedy Coffea Cruda will help you calm those thoughts and settle down.

If these don't do the trick, obtaining functional labs to determine hormone and neurotransmitter levels as well as any micronutrient deficiency and food allergies will reveal hidden root cause. We can guide you through the process of dealing with your sleep issues so you can get the z's you need to be healthy and happy!
